In addition to those listed above, the show included Mach, Lesli Margherita, Alex Boniello, Jelani Remy, Russell Fischer, Brittany Johnson, Joaquina Kalukango, Justin Matthew Sargent, Chad Brown, Kennedy Caughell, Kyle Taylor Parker, Amber Iman and Daniel J. With so much talent (and no program), it was wise to project the Twitter handles of each performer as he or she sang so one can stay abreast of their future shows on (or off) Broadway. The harmonies were dazzling throughout, and as with Broadway Sings Their Own, I wondered how different the contemporary rock and pop scene would be if more singers had training like this. There was not an off number, but a few performances stood out: “Single Ladies” (Lilli Cooper), “Broken Hearted Girl” (Natalie Weiss), a mash-up of “Bills” and “Name” (Alexa Green, Bryna O’Neill, Alexis Sims), “Irreplaceable” (Michael Wartella) and “Listen” (Alyssa Fox), at which the Highline Ballroom just about exploded. ![]() The energy in the Highline Ballroom was indescribable, as though a collective rock id had been unleashed. One of the best musical directors and pianists in New York (and probably the country), Kartes’ arrangements brought out the best in Beyoncé’s songs and allowed Broadway performers to tap into their inner rock stars. Joshua Stephen Kartes is the unsung hero of the series. But from the first notes of “Love on Top,” I kicked myself for not having seen every installment since the series’ inception some five years ago. With a virtuosic 10-piece band, 20 performers, and three backup singers, there’s no way to offer detailed reviews of the individual numbers. All one can say about Broadway Sings Beyoncé-the latest in Corey Mach’s (pictured) series, Broadway Sings-is that it was one of the best concerts of any kind I’ve ever seen. ![]()
